Robert Morrissey

— The Story

The Eye Behind the Lens

Robert Morrissey has been creating images that stop people cold for over 37 years. Based in Longmont, Colorado, he is the founder of Big Red Nose Studio — a commercial photography and video production powerhouse trusted by corporations, industrial giants, and brands across North America — and Portrait Division, a family-owned sports and portrait photography studio with over 30 years serving communities across Colorado.

His work doesn't live in one genre. It lives in the space where light, tension, and truth collide. Military helicopters on Kansas airfields. Scientists in California clean rooms. Welders on Texas oil sites. ICU patients in Colorado hospitals. Product splashes for national brands. Indie films with soul. Sports portraits that capture the fire in an athlete's eyes.

Robert has photographed for Irish Spring, JW Speaker, Longmont Dairy, BioWave, Glo Minerals, AmpJet, OilPro, and dozens of others. His cinematic work has been published across more than 40 countries. He has written books on photography. He holds FAA certification for drone operations. He shoots on 6K cinema cameras and brings that same obsessive technical standard to every single frame.

He doesn't teach photography the way it's always been taught. He developed the EXP=SDQC method — Exposure equals Sensitivity, Duration, Quantity, and Color — a framework that replaces the oversimplified exposure triangle with a system that actually matches how light behaves in the real world. His students don't just learn to use a camera. They learn to see.

Photography in the Raw is the distillation of 37 years of mastery into 15 modules and 91 lessons. It is not a beginner's course. It is an apprenticeship.

— The Philosophy

Forget the Triangle.

Master the Method.

The exposure triangle has been the foundation of photography education for decades. It is also incomplete. Robert spent years developing a framework that teaches exposure the way it actually works — not as a triangle, but as an equation: EXP = S · D · Q · C. Sensitivity. Duration. Quantity. Color. Four variables. Infinite possibilities. This is how masters think about light.

S

Sensitivity

ISO / Sensor Gain

How sensitive is your canvas to light?

D

Duration

Shutter Speed

How long does light have to paint?

Q

Quantity

Aperture

How much light enters the frame?

C

Color

White Balance & Color Temp

What is the emotional temperature of your light?
